The Ford Explorer has long been one of the best-selling SUVs in the market. Knowing a good thing when they see it; Ford made only minor changes for 2012. The 2012 Ford Explorer got a new available 2.0 liter four-cylinder EcoBoost engine with direct fuel injection. New color offerings include Ginger Ale Metallic, Dark Blue Pearl Metallic, Cinnamon Metallic and Black. The 2012 Ford Explorer seats seven and comes in three trim levels: Base, XLT and Limited.

2012 Ford Explorer Augusta GAThe 2012 Ford Explorer is powered by a 3.5-liter Ti-VCT V6 engine that makes 290 horsepower and 255 lb.-ft. of torque, mated to a six-speed automatic transmission with SelectShift. The 2.0-liter four-cylinder Ecoboost engine, that develops 275 horsepower, is available on FWD models. The Explorer is available in both front- and four-wheel drive configurations. 4x4 models have Ford's terrain management system that lets the driver select the specific terrain to provide improved performance. Driver-selected modes including snow, sand, mud and normal enable drivers to conquer any terrain – the system also includes hill descent. Estimated EPA fuel economy for the 3.5-liter engine is 17 mpg city/15 mpg highway. The 2.0-liter EcoBoost engine gets 29 mpg highway.

Standard safety features include 4-wheel antilock brakes with electronic brakeforce distribution, second-generation first-rowairbags, side seat airbags, Safety Canopy side curtain airbags, AdvanceTrac with Roll Stability Control and Curve Control functionality, exclusive rear inflatable seatbelts for outboard seating positions, adaptive cruise control and collision warning with brake support, SOS Post-Crash Alert System, child seat anchors, front and rear height adjustable headrests, front seatbelt pretensioners, and tire pressure monitoring. V6 models have a maximum towing capacity of 5,000 pounds.

Standard goodies on the 2012 Ford Explorer include 17-inch steel wheels, air conditioning, privacy glass, integrated blind spot mirrors, roof rails, cruise control, a six-way power driver seat (manual recline), a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, MyFord advanced trip computer and a six-speaker sound system with a CD player and an auxiliary audio jack. XLT trims adds 18-inch aluminum wheels, fog lamps, reverse sensing system, USB port, satellite radio, and the SYNC communications and entertainment system. Limited trims upgrade to 20-inch aluminum wheels, heated front seats, leather upholstery, dual-zone automatic climate control, HD radio, Intelligent Access with push-button start, and a rearview camera.
