The 2012 Ford Explorer is powered by a 3.5-liter Ti-VCT V6 engine that makes 290 horsepower and 255 lb.-ft. of torque, mated to a six-speed automatic transmission with SelectShift. The 2.0-liter four-cylinder Ecoboost engine, that develops 275 horsepower, is available on FWD models. The Explorer is available in both front- and four-wheel drive configurations. 4x4 models have Ford's terrain management system that lets the driver select the specific terrain to provide improved performance. Driver-selected modes including snow, sand, mud and normal enable drivers to conquer any terrain – the system also includes hill descent. Estimated EPA fuel economy for the 3.5-liter engine is 17 mpg city/15 mpg highway. The 2.0-liter EcoBoost engine gets 29 mpg highway.
Standard safety features include 4-wheel antilock brakes with electronic brakeforce distribution, second-generation first-rowairbags, side seat airbags, Safety Canopy side curtain airbags, AdvanceTrac with Roll Stability Control and Curve Control functionality, exclusive rear inflatable seatbelts for outboard seating positions, adaptive cruise control and collision warning with brake support, SOS Post-Crash Alert System, child seat anchors, front and rear height adjustable headrests, front seatbelt pretensioners, and tire pressure monitoring. V6 models have a maximum towing capacity of 5,000 pounds.
